Addressing facility hygiene with autonomous UV-C technology

High-traffic facilities such as retailers, gyms, and hospitality venues need consistent, verifiable cleaning processes to help protect staff and visitors. During the pandemic, many businesses relied heavily on manual sanitization, requiring employees to clean surfaces by hand across large, busy environments. This approach was time-consuming, difficult to validate, and created gaps in coverage during peak hours or overnight shifts.

To improve consistency and traceability, OMRON partnered with UV Systems UK to introduce autonomous UV-C Disinfection Robots for commercial facilities. Using precision UV-C lamps and advanced navigation, the robots can move through a space without manual operation, disinfecting exposed surfaces and logging completed areas for reporting.

In a 100,000 sq. ft. supermarket, a single robot can complete a disinfection cycle in approximately 2–3 hours while eliminating up to 99% of viruses and other pathogens on exposed surfaces. Unlike chemical-based cleaning processes, UV-C disinfection reduces the need for harsh substances and limits the amount of repetitive manual work required from staff.

The robots are designed for safe operation in active commercial environments. Integrated sensors detect obstacles and automatically stop the robot if a person enters the operating area. Wi-Fi connectivity also allows facility managers to access real-time reports, verify completed disinfection routes, and quickly identify any missed areas.

By automating part of the sanitization workflow, businesses can improve cleaning consistency, support regulatory requirements, and provide greater confidence for employees and customers. The solution also allows staff to focus on higher-value work rather than repetitive cleaning tasks.
