Automated Meal Deliveries Enhance Efficiency and Resident Well-Being

Piloting autonomous food logistics with ‘Polle’ AMR
At the Kustaankartano Senior Center in Helsinki, manual meal transport across a sprawling campus was both time-consuming and inefficient. To streamline daily operations, the center partnered with Dimalog Oy, Service Centre Helsinki, Forum Virium Helsinki, and Muotohiomo Oy to pilot the ‘Polle’ service robot—an autonomous mobile robot based on OMRON’s LD-250 AMR. ‘Polle’ independently navigates tunnels, lifts, and ramps, efficiently transporting meals, mail, laundry, and waste between the central kitchen and care wards. By automating these repetitive logistics tasks, the pilot ensures timely deliveries and allows staff to focus more on direct resident interaction.
With real-time notifications for delivery issues, flexible handling of various logistics tasks, and safe navigation around unexpected obstacles, the AMR has quickly proven its value. The project is already offering actionable insights into robotics in healthcare logistics and stands as a model for future automation across Helsinki’s services.

“We are looking for new ways to work and free up the resources of our staff so that they can spend more time taking care of the residents and working with them. Digitalisation is the future, and we are eager to see what opportunities it and robotics will bring, and we want to be involved in this development work.” — Tarja Sainio, Director, Kustaankartano Senior Centre
